PIRATES ARE FAVOURITES - HUNT

The Buccaneers have not lost a game since the German mentor came on board in December.

It’s six games, and counting, and no team has been close to beating the Soweto giants.

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt is convinced his side are going into their Nedbank Cup round of 32 tie at the Orlando Stadium today (3pm), as the underdogs. Bucs have won five out of their past six league matches and are going into the Ke Yona competition as favourites.

Hunt has thrown the favourites tag at Pirates ahead their big showdown in Soweto as he played down his team’s chances of advancing to the next round.

Zinnbauer was at Milpark to spy on Wits in their Absa Premiership encounter against Black Leopards on Thursday night. But the game was called off due to bad weather.

The last time the Clever Boys and Pirates played against each other, the game ended in a seven-goal thriller at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban in September last year.

The games between Wits and Pirates are known for turning into thrillers, and Hunt expects plenty of goals and a big crowd.

But he was not bothered that their league game could not go ahead as planned.

Hunt also brushed aside any suggestion that the Bucs coach returned home disappointed as he was unable to watch his team in action.

Said Hunt: “I’m not worried that the Pirates coach didn’t watch us play. He’ll watch videos of how we play, and the two teams know each other well.

“We wanted to play this game, but the players’ safety is the most important thing. We didn’t want players to get struck by lightning.”

Hunt is not surprised by Bucs’ rich vein of form because of the type of players they have.

Explained Hunt: “Not at all. I’m not surprised because Pirates have quality players.”

The PSL’s top scorer with 14 goals Gabadinho Mhango is out due to suspension. But Hunt said his absence won’t make any difference as Pirates have already made replacements.

“They have more than enough players in that position. Bucs are favourites to win. We’re the big underdogs,” he said.
