FOOTBALL players tend to have a reputation for being bad at handling their money.
But some players have proven that they have more than just skills on the pitch, carving out a career with their outstanding entrepreneurial skills after their playing days are over.
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town midfielder Willard Katsande is one player who has started planning for life after football.
Currently, the 35-year-old is on the books of Sekhukhune United.
However, Katsande is one person who does not suffer from bazothini abantu (what will people say) syndrome.
He does what he feels is good for him at any time.
Katsande has ventured into the plumbing business, and he said it is not just plumbing as they also clean peoples yards and do other projects.
He explained: “I can say it is a new business now, but I registered the company in 2017. But I was still learning, now I’m busy working. It is operating full time now. We are doing a lot of work from home renovations, interiors and exteriors, handyman services such as bathroom fittings, kitchen fittings, and ceilings.”
Katsande, who also owns the property, is also working on an online fashion shop operating early next year. “I am a busy man but a lot will be revealed early next year. We are cooking a lot of things.”
Talking to SunSport Boss Ya Mboka, as he is affectionately known on social media platforms, said being a businessman has always been his thing from a young age.
“I have been business minded since I was young,” he revealed.
Currently, his business employs eight people.
“Growing up in my rural area (Mutoko in Zimbabwe) I was selling sugar. I would go to town and buy 50kg of Sugar and come back and sell it in cups at an affordable price for people in the village to make money.”
Katsande said he wants to inspire more people. “I’m doing this for a better future for my family and kids. My football career will end, and I still need to provide for them. Also, I’m doing this to inspire people.”
