LEBOHANG “Cheeseboy” Mokoena is grateful for the opportunity to showcase his skill in the top-flight again next season.
The 33-year-old is one of the players who were retained by Swallows FC ahead of their long-awaited return to the Premiership next season.
The Dube Birds completed a near miraculous comeback to the land of milk and honey, having previously fallen as low as the fourth-tier.
Mokoena was a key member of the team that pulled off a stunning title run as they clinched the inaugural GladAfrica Championship and sealed their return to the top-flight.
The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star had seen his career decline in the past few years, and was even considering hanging up his boots.
He was talked out of that decision by Swallows coach Brandon Truter, who was not willing to lose Mokoena’s experience in the dressing room.
“I’m looking forward to playing in the PSL again, having spent a lot of time in the second division,” said Mokoena.
“This is an opportunity to remind people who I am and what I’m capable to do. Obviously, I’m no longer the Lebo they remember. I’m a more experienced player now and I offer much more to the team. I’m glad I have the people around me that I have who convinced me to keep playing and that I still had a lot to offer the game.
“My wife is a God fearing woman and our faith is the reason why I’m here.
“The coach also sat me down and gave me a lot of confidence.”
Mokoena now hopes to finish his career on a high note with Swallows in the top-flight challenging for silverware.
He has been promised a position in the technical team by chairman David Mogashoa, once he hangs up his boots.
Mokoena, who is already working on his coaching qualifications, might take Mogashoa up on the offer as he is keen to keep contributing to the game beyond his playing days.
“I’m attending a few coaching clinics and I have some projects working with young players.
“I really want to stay in football,” added Mokoena.
