KAIZER Chiefs have secured their berth in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup…. barely.

They were made to sweat for it by a stubborn Royal Eagles outfit who play in the GladAfrica Championship.

The Glamour Boys managed to stumble over the line with a hard-fought 1-0 win over second division outfit at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

For a second game running, Lebogang Manyama was the saviour for Amakhosi after he scored the winning goal.

He was also the math winner in Chiefs’ last game in the league against Golden Arrows at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Eagles, who are currently fighting for survival in the Championship, displayed a doggedness that they have not shown previously in the league.

They were hard to break down and had a solid game plan to catch Amakhosi on the break.

But unfortunately, Chiefs’ quality was the difference with the game changing after the introduction of Khama Billiat and Bernard Parker.

The former was making his first appearance for Amakhosi this year.Chiefs fans would also have been delighted to see Itumeleng Khune back on the field as he started in goal ahead of Daniel Akpeyi.

Chiefs will now have their name in the draw that will take place on Monday night.
