AMAZULU coach Benni McCarthy fears for the worse for his side when it comes to the group stages of the Caf Champions League, saying his squad is not good enough.

The draw for the group stages will be held next month or in January at Caf headquarters in Cairo.

McCarthy who won Uefa Champions League in 2004 with Porto, is ambitious to succeed in the Caf version of the elite club competition, but he said his squad are not good enough to go toe to toe with the likes of Wydad Casablanca, Al Ahly or Zamalek, who are among the best sides on the continent.

McCarthy said his side’s 1-1 away draw in the DStv Premiership against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday left much to be desired.

McCarthy in pulling no punches said his squad could be slaughtered since as they are set to be in the group of death in the Champions League.

“Unfortunately yes,” said McCarthy. “Because I don’t think we got what it takes to compete in the Caf Champions League, in the league and the Nedbank Cup which is starting soon, that is above our pay grade.

“We need quality, and we need players with a mentality that can help us push the team. We are good enough to compete in the league, but come the Champions League I think we will run out of gas and it would be too much of a hurdle for us. We need additions, we need quality, not quantity.

“With this squad, we are going to have a big shortage because we might get Al Ahly, Zamalek, you might get the top teams the way the group stages are set up. We are bound for a group of death by the look of things. What we are showing week in and week out in the PSL, we have shortcomings.”

Because AmaZulu’s Caf points are low they are placed in Pot 4.

Usuthu could be drawn in a group of death with Al Ahly, Mamelodi Sundowns and Algeria’s CR Belouizdad.

POT 1: Al Ahly, Esperance (Tunisia), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Raja Casablanca (Morocco).

POT 2: Mamelodi Sundowns, Zamalek (Egypt), Horoya (Guinea) and Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia).

POT 3:  Al Hilal (Sudan), Algeria’s CR Belouizdad, ES Setif and Angola’s Petro de Luanda.

POT 4: AmaZulu, Al Merrikh (Sudan), Sagrada Esperanca (Angola) and Jwaneng Galaxy (Botswana).
