MAMELODI Sundowns Ladies have completed the treble!
Having started the week on a high, with hundreds of fans welcoming them at OR Tambo International Airport after winning the inaugural Caf Women's Champions League title in Egypt, the Downs Ladies team ensured they complete a perfect week by defending their Hollywoodbets Super League title and having won the Cosafa regional title they have completed a unique treble.
On Wednesday, they defeated JVW 2-1 at the Groenkloof Stadium to clinch the trophy with three games to spare.
Goals from Andisiwe Mgcoyi and Chantelle Esau handed Sundowns the title.
Banyana Ba Style accumulated 64 points after 23 games, six points ahead of second placed Tshwane University of Technology ladies, who are on 58 points having played 25 games.
For winning the league, the Downs Ladies will be smiling all the way to the bank as they will get an R2 million in prize money for defending the title. The league runner's up will pocket R1 million while the other clubs will each receive R150 000.
“I am happy and excited we won the league again," said Banyana Ba Style coach Jerry Tshabalala. “We need to treat the remaining games with respect as we did the matches before winning the league. Remember we have a record we need to keep. But the more we win the more we become confident and come next season we will do it again."
Tshabalala said his highlight of the season was conquering Africa when no one gave them a chance. “We did it in a different way when no one gave us a chance,” said Tshabalala.
Star midfielder Esau credited their hard work and team effort for their success. She stated: "It was a team effort as everyone played their part in ensuring the victory. By winning the league, we have become treble winners."
