THE reason Razak Brimah chose Absa Premiership side Mamelodi Sundowns is because he wants to win trophies.
The Ghanaian goalkeeper turned down offers from Greece and Turkey, opting to join the 2016 African champions instead.
The 30-year-old described Downs as the best club in Africa, who play to win every trophy available.“I joined Sundowns because they are the best team in the PSL and also in Africa,” he said.
“When you look at their history you can see that they play to win every competition. I wanted to play for that kind of a club. “If you look at the players, most of them are internationals, which tells you that this is the best team in Africa. They want to win things and I want to win things too.”
He added: “I also had a good talk with our head coach Pitso Mosimane, and I love his and the club’s ambition.”
Brimah, who spent most of his career in Europe (Spain, Germany and Portugal), has only played for the Brazilians twice since joining them this season.He was in goal in the seven-time PSL champions’ 2-1 win against Free State Stars and also for the 1-0 victory over the bottom-of-the-table Platinum Stars at Royal Bafokeng Stadium two weeks ago.
“It was a great feeling to play and to win,” he said. “I will never let down the coach and fans when I get the chance to play.” Brimah said he loved the competition between him, Zambian international Kennedy Mweene and Ugandan international Denis Onyango.
Onyango was voted the 2016 Caf Africa Player of the Year after helping Downs win the Champions League.“I have no problem with competition, especially when you are competing against the best goalkeeper on the continent,” he said.
“I have a good relationship with Denis and Kennedy, and all the players at Sundowns have welcomed me and made me feel at home.”
Brimah was first choice goalie for Ghana for the 2015 African Cup of Nations. Ghana reached the final but lost 9-8 on penalties to Ivory Coast. He has 27 caps for his country. He will be hoping to get the nod when Sundowns face Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs in their next league match at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday (7.30pm).
