The duo joined Usuthu from Maritzburg United.
Maritzburg made a shocking decision when they released Buchanan while the club was fighting relegation in February.
The 29-year-old former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder contract was left with four months at that time as it lapsed at the end of June.
Kunene also joined Usuthu from The Team of Choice on a free transfer after not renewing his contract with the club.
“I have been back now and the team is looking good, fitness level is impressive after the four and half weeks the break they had,” McCarthy said.
“The two new boys are settling well Keagan Buchanan and Mxolisi Kunene are settling well. Kunene is easing himself in, he’s coming back from injuries and there’s a lot of positive signs from him.”
The former Bafana Bafana striker said they are not done yet in the market, reinforcing their squad for Caf Champions League.
Usuthu will compete in the CAF Champions League for the first time after finishing second in the DStv Premiership last season.
McCarthy said: “We have quite good editions and we still looking for two or more players to beef up the squad and have more depth as we will be going to Caf Champions League. We looking forward to bring lot of joy with the football that we will play when the season kick-off.”
