BIDVEST WITS have already beaten both Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the Absa Premiership this season.
That alone should boost the Clever Boys’ confidence as they head into their next match against league champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Milpark Stadium today (3.30pm).
But four-time league-winning coach Gavin Hunt argues Chiefs and Pirates can’t be compared with Downs in terms of quality.
Hunt believes the standard of Chiefs and Pirates has dropped in the past couple of years, while Downs are in a class of their own.
Beating the Tshwane giants is a bigger mission than beating the Soweto giants, according to Hunt.
“Let’s be honest, you can’t compare the two (Chiefs and Pirates) with Sundowns. They are a far better team. They have much more continuity better players and With all due respect to their coaches, Downs coach Pitso Mosimane has won everything.
Said Hunt: “Sundowns are have better players. Let’s not go there, we can’t even compare them. Sundowns have been the best team in the past couple of years. They are the best team because they have the best resources, a very good coach and a changed mentality.”
Hunt went on to say Chiefs and Pirates were the best clubs in the country in terms of fan base, but not based on their performance on the pitch in the last 10 years.
Defeating the Brazilians will be seen as a big achievement to the Clever Boys than their wins over the Soweto giants.
Hunt said: “Chiefs have not acquired the players they are used to in the past and they have suffered because of that.
“Pirates have gone up and down, but Sundowns have been the most consistent team because of their recruitment and stability in their coaching set-up, They won the Champions League in 2016.” he said.
Hunt has also done a great job with the Clever Boys, as he has changed their small club mentality.
Wits will go into the pick of the weekend matches with hopes to upset the defending league champions.
Hunt added: “We can beat anyone. We’ve made changes by bringing in a couple of new players.
“It’s all about mentality. We brought in average players, got them organised and we are on the right track. If we can get our players to do the right thing, we can still be successful. So far so good.”
