BARKER: WE CAN DO BETTER!

accreditation

STELLENBOSCH FC coach Steve Barker has warned his charges not to rest on their laurels and think they are now the champions of the National First Division (NFD) – there’s still a long way to go!

Stellies are the early pace-setters in the league having collected 14 points after six matches and remain the only team that has not tasted a defeat in the league so far.

The Cape Town based outfit is now proving that last season’s performance, which saw them reaching the promotion/relegation play-offs, was not a fluke but a sign that they could do better at any given time. Last season they finished third in the log behind Thanda Royal Zulu, who were crowned the champions, and Black Leopards who finished second.

After six matches of the 2017-18 season they have won four and drawn two, but coach Barker insists that they could do better in the next matches.

“It is still early. It would have been better if we were sitting in this position after 30 games.

“We need to stay grounded and maintain consistency,” said Barker.

The NFD clubs will not be in action this weekend due to the Fifa break, and will be back in action on 13 October.

Stellies will keep themselves busy with friendly matches with the likes of Cape Town City and other clubs from the NFD and PSL.

The international break could also come in handy for the likes of Black Leopards, Royal Eagles and Richards bay FC who have been struggling to find their feet in the league, each having won only one match out of six.
