THABISO Zulu believes he was attacked by people who want to silence him because he is exposing corruption.

Zulu, a KZN anti-corruption activist and close friend of murdered ANC Umzimkhulu councillor Sindiso Magaqa, has been shot multiple times and is in hospital.

Zulu was attacked by unknown gunmen at Copesville in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night. Speaking to Daily Sun from hospital, Zulu said he was walking with his friend when a car pulled up.

He said the family was disturbed as it had been relying on his support since Magaqa was killed.

He said three people came out of the car and opened fire and he still has four bullets in his chest. His friend wasn’t injured.

Zulu feared the hitmen would come and kill him, so he asked to be moved to a private hospital. “I’ve been a target since Magaqa was killed. I know there are people who want me dead,” he said. “I believe it’s related to my anti-corruption activities.”

Police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker said Mountain Rise cops have opened an attempted murder docket.

He said cops were told he was released from the hospital and they were trying to find out where he was.

Magaqa’s brother Lwazi expressed his shock at Zulu’s attack. He said the family was disturbed as it had been relying on his support since Magaqa was killed.

Zulu, who’s expected to testify at Magaqa’s trial, has been complaining about Police Minister Bheki Cele’s refusal to give him bodyguards after the police’s intelligence risk assessment and public protectors’ reports suggested his life was in danger.
