FORMER eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede's suspension has finally been lifted and she is free to go back to work as Councillor.

This was confirmed to Daily Sun on Tuesday by party provincial spokesman Ricardo Mthembu.

He said Gumede and and another ANC Councillor Mondli Mthembu were now free to go to work after their leave has finally been cancelled.

"The public must remember that they were asked to take leave because she was the mayor and Mthembu was head of infrastructure but since they are ordinary Councillors bail conditions means  nothing because they will not have anything to do which may violate bail conditions," said Mthembu.

He said as ward Councillor Gumede may attend to the issues of the ward. The party fired the mayor and all six ANC executive committee members (exco).

The party said it was keeping the officials as Councillors while it is rearranging positions.

It indicated that they may still return to the exco but not to their old positions.

Gumede's supporters leader Mzo Dube said they don't regard mayor's removal as dismissal but rather as reshuffle.

He said they were disappointed and they will study the decision before deciding on the way forward.

Dube said they don't understand how ANC can fire people on the bases of their performances which is not the mandate of the party.

"As far as we know Cooperative Governance minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is busy assessing municipalities throughout the country and few weeks back she was here in eThekwini.

Now we don't know how she will feel when she comes back and find that there is no exco to answer her questions," said Dube.
