We needed the booze ban!

THE Covid-19 pandemic is difficult and confusing, and we need to commend and support the initiatives being taken to control the spread.

The results of lockdown and alcohol ban during the festive season are there for everyone to see.

For the first time in the history of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, its trauma rescue area, normally inundated with drunken patients, had no patients on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day!The immediate public health benefits of the ban make it clear that alcohol is the major contributor to a lot of our social and health problems. For the greater good of its citizens, South Africa should immediately tackle the scourge of alcohol abuse.

Tito Mboweni must begin by raising sin tax to 100% on all alcohol beverages.

And wives should join in the fight by denying husbands who spend all their money on booze a plate of food.

Send the drunken fool back to the shebeen queen for his food.
