SHOPPERS were ducking for cover as alleged robbers opened fire at Oriental Plaza, shopping centre in Fordsburg, Joburg.
On Tuesday, 26 October chaos erupted in full view of shoppers and bystanders.
Images and videos taken during the shooting have since been circulating on social media.
One of the videos shows a group of armed men with rifles traveling in a gold double bakkie opening fire at the parking lot before fleeing the scene.
According to unconfirmed reports, a security guard and a construction worker sustained injuries. Further claims suggest that cars including Joburg Metro Police JMPD) vehicles were also damaged.
Following the shooting, the shopping centre was surrounded by a high police presence including medical emergency personnel
Jmpd spokesman, Xolani Fihla confirmed that one of their vehicles was damaged during the shootout, but no officers were injured.
At this stage is unclear if anything was stolen.
“Several vehicles were shot outside the premises, including security and JMPD (Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department) vehicles. Twelve suspects believed to be carrying automatic rifles have fled the mall,” Vision Tactical said.
The security firm further said: “We ask that the guard and construction worker are kept in your prayers and are happy to report that both are in stable condition.”
Police are yet to release details about the shooting.
On Sunday, 24th October, two people were shot and wounded following a robbery incident at a jewelry store at the Menlyn shopping mall in Tshwane.
