A building in the Durban CBD is on fire, resulting in multiple casualties, according to paramedics on the scene.
The fire was reported at China Mall in West Street shortly after 10:00, said EMER-G-MED spokesperson Kyle van Reenen.
Speaking from the scene, Van Reenen said paramedics had witnessed people trapped in the building breaking windows and trying to climb out, in order to escape the flames. Firefighters had been able to rescue these people, but others remained trapped in the building.
"The fire is throughout the whole building, spreading floor by floor," said Van Reenen.
KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie confirmed there was a fire, and that two fire trucks were at the scene. He had no further details at the time of publication.
