Things got out of hand as people ignored the rules of social distancing in a bid to be first in line.
This after kids and adults ran towards the Madala hostel in Alex to get free hand sanitisers.
One would have thought they were running to get food, but all they wanted was to be like everyone else who could afford sanitiser.
One woman told Daily Sun that she didn't trust this sudden act of kindness from the government.
"They want to kill us with this thing they claim it’s hand sanitiser. Why aren't they taking it to other kasis but bringing it here, they clearly want to get rid of this overcrowding and we are the victims," she said.
Silendelo Shandu (34) said he wasn't going to buy sanitiser with his own money, so it's a good thing that they are getting it for free.
"It's not a priority for me, what's important to me is to make sure that my family doesn't go to bed on an empty stomach with the little money I have," said Silendelo.
The sanitisers were an initiative from the Department of Agriculture and Economic Development.
One of the employees told the SunTeam that not only were they giving people free sanitisers, but they would soon be doing house visits.
"I can say things got a bit out of hand because the target for today was mainly hostels, then house-to-house visits would follow. People are also asked to fill in questionnaires about their health and if they have enough food," he said.
