SEVERAL homes in Riverpark, Alexandra, were left without power on Thursday after a mini substation exploded.
According to the City of Joburg, a man was injured as the substation exploded when he was allegedly trying to connect electricity illegally.
“We appeal to residents to desist from vandalising and tampering with electricity infrastructure as this is illegal and dangerous,” the city said.
South Africa has been battling with electricity supply over the past two weeks, resulting in Eskom implementing stage 4 load shedding.
At the time, the power utility blamed this on breakdowns at the Medupi and Duvha power stations as well as the lack of emergency generation reserves.
