WATCH: CREDO MUTWA'S QUOTES AND VIDEOS!

accreditation

Celebrated traditional healer Credo Mutwa passed away on Wednesday at the age of 98.

Mutwa was a gifted artist known for his talents in African spirituality and culture.

In 2018 Mutwa was honoured with an USIBA award presented by the South African Department of Arts and Culture, for his work in Indigenous Wisdom.

During the Apartheid era Credo supported a separation between white and black people saying it would preserve black traditional tribal customs and way of life.

While in 1976, students partially burnt down his cultural village after he was misquoted on radio.

Parts of the village were burnt again in the mid-1980s during a strike against the West Rand city council.

Here are some of Mutwa’s quotes.

  •  “I am one of the scums of this earth, a creature rejected and ridiculed by university professors, professors who later came sneaking into my home seeking the very information that they ridiculed me for revealing.” - Credo Mutwa
  •  “Don’t get angry overshadows. Let the pains of the past go by because if you do, your soul becomes corrupted, your soul becomes warped.” - Credo Mutwa
  • “I’m talking old, historical truth. History should not be thrown away like an old pumpkin. History should not be scoffed at. History should be not mocked, especially the history of Africa.”- Credo Mutwa

Situated in Western Jabavu in Soweto, Credo Mutwa
Situated in Western Jabavu in Soweto, Credo Mutwa Cultural Village is a park, museum or outdoor exhibition of amazing sculptures and buildings created by African artist and traditional healer Credo Mutwa using recyclable materials. The private collection of sculptures that he constructed ages ago shows African lifestyle and art with a a twist of prophecy mystery. The village is one of the most neglected but yet loved by tourist, respected by the locals for its mystical settings and draws lots of mixed emotions because of how Credo Mutwa was chased from the place. Volunteer Irvin Mothiba helps to clean the place. Photo by Morapedi Mashashe8BIM
