A SOUTH African Police Union shop steward in the Free State was reportedly moered by a cop on Wednesday, 9 June.
The union representatives had gone to Mangaung cop shop to seek clarity on work-related matters, including the decision not to allow cars belonging to employees to enter.
An argument started when the cop refused to talk. Chaos ensued and the commander slapped Mokeke Mokgosi. In a video that surfaced, angry union members shouted at the commander after the incident.
In an interview with Daily Sun, Mokgosi said: “My superiors stopped me from opening an assault case against him, but I feel offended for being slapped instead of sitting down with me to discuss labour matters.
“And I’ve never received any apology from him or the police. Our intention was to engage with him in order to come up with an amicable solution.”
The union’s provincial secretary, Morui Mphou, said: “We saw what happened. There was a misunderstanding between the parties involved with regard to the issue of parking for employees. But I can safely say the matter was amicably resolved.”
Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said: “The meeting happened behind closed doors and someone decided to leak information to the media. We can only comment if the union opens a case.”
