BASIC Education Minister Angie Motshekga will have a special breakfast with the country’s top achievers at Vodaworld in Midrand this morning.
The results will come out tomorrow, followed by MEC’s announcements of pass rates.
Matric Smangele Ntuli (17) of Tembisa High, Ekurhuleni, spoke for many when she said: “During the holidays I told myself not to read newspapers to avoid being reminded of the coming results. But now it’s back to reality. I can’t sleep at night.”
Reabetswe Lehoko (18) of Fons Luminis High School in Soweto didn’t know what would happen if she failed.
“I tried my best,” said Reabetswe.
But Manuel Mudau (18) of Phomolong Secondary School in Tembisa said: “I want to study medicine.
“Good results in maths and physical science will open doors to the career of my choice.”
Cassey Chambers of the SA Depression and Anxiety Group said there hadn’t been a spike in calls for help.
“We encourage pupils to call us if they are anxious or depressed.
“Students feel if they fail, or don’t get the results they want, it’s all over.
“But there are different kinds of help available such as rewriting exams or supplementary exams.”
For help, call the group’s Destiny Helpline on 0800 41 42 43 or the suicide line on 0800 567 567.
