THE festive season is upon us, and criminals are sharpening their tricks to scam people of their hard-earned money.
The Randburg Magistrates Court remanded two men in custody on Friday, 3 December, who were charged with fraud involving an exclusive Limpopo artwork.
According to Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, it is alleged that on Monday, the pair approached a Bryanston auctioneer selling a fake painting for about R600 000.
“The Hawks’ serious organised crime investigation team in Germiston conducted a sting operation on Tuesday in Bryanston. It resulted in the apprehension of two men in possession of the fraudulent exclusive painting,” Mulamu said in a statement.
She added that the accused, aged 32 and 33, were immediately arrested and charged with fraud.
“The case was postponed to 9 December for residential addresses and citizenship verification. Investigation continues, and more arrests cannot be ruled out.”
