SESHEGO Community Against Crime and Gangsterism outside Polokwane in Limpopo is concerned about abandoned houses and old factories that criminals use as hiding spots.
Seshego and its extensions have been terrorised by gangs.
However, since the formation of the anti-crime group, community secretary Thabo Mosedame said reports of gang-related crimes were reduced.
He said once they caught a criminal, they handed them over to the police.
Thabo said their aim was to squeeze criminal elements out of their area.
He said criminals hid in abandoned houses and waited for victims to walk past.
“They then attack and rob them.
“Drug dealings and other forms of crime happen there. We will leave no stone unturned to make sure we speak to the owners of those buildings to take care of them,” he said.
Thabo said they were aware some people demanded money from community members by claiming to patrol the streets.
“Our community must also know we never ask for any sort of finances from the community.
“We call on residents to please help us expose those criminals.
“We are currently using our own money,” he said.
He said they drafted forms for those who would like to join them.
“It’s very important for Seshego Community Against Crime and Gangsterism to know and identify everyone patrolling the streets.
“This is done to avoid gangsters and other unlawful people taking advantage of our movement and plans,” said Thabo.
“Hence, each patrolling volunteer should sign a form for identification.
“Members must please bring along a copy of their ID.”
