HE BROKE into the house to steal – but then forgot he was a thief!

He helped himself to some food, stepped out of his jeans and switched on the TV.

THEN THE DUMB THUG SETTLED DOWN TO CHILL ON THE SOFA IN HIS UNDERPANTS!

Ayanda Jonas (29) from Hostel 1 kasi in Mangaung told Daily Sun that when he stepped into his own living room on Tuesday night for a moment, he thought he was in the wrong house.

“After pushing the broken door open I found a man on the sofa, eating and watching TV,” he said.

“I think he was more surprised than me. He threw a plate of pap and fish at me.”

Ayanda said he ran outside and called out to neighbours that someone was in his house.

“We rushed back and found the thug still in his underwear,” said Ayanda.

“He told us he thought the house owner was on holiday, so he made himself at home. I work at a construction site, so I left home early in the morning, so he couldn’t have seen me leaving.”

Residents gave the thief a beating he’ll never forget.

“He was rescued by cops after a resident stopped a passing police van,” said Ayanda.

“I learnt he was taken to hospital and I never went to the police to open a case.

“He didn’t steal anything. He left his jeans and sneakers behind in my bedroom.”

Neighbour Sipho Nguni, who went into the house with Ayanda, said: “The thug was so relaxed he even had the kettle on.

“We made an example of him so others will think twice before breaking into our homes.”

Acting provincial commissioner, Major-General Solly Lesia, said: “We welcome the help of the community in the fight against crime, but they must do it by giving us information that will assist in our investigations and by doing citizens’ arrests.”

He said under no circumstances would they allow people to take the law into their own hands.

“That only makes the investigation of the case more difficult.

“It also means cases will have to be registered against the people who beat up the thugs and people will get arrested.

“People should refrain from acting on emotions but allow the law to take its course.”
