HE WANTED to steal cables from the school’s air conditioners but when he heard dogs barking, he went to hid in the ceiling.
But the dumb thug was too heavy and ended up falling from the ceiling and landed on the dogs!
Dina Khaile, SGB chairwoman at Thopodi Primary School in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, said the school has been burgled five times before the incident on Friday.
“The man confessed to having broken into the school three times before being caught,” she said.
Dina said two weeks ago, they decided to get Basotho men to guard the school with their dogs.
“We think having dogs will make thugs stay away from our school. The thugs were targeting a row of classes and stealing electrical cables from the air conditioners,” she said.
Dina said the thugs gained access to the school by jumping over a fence.
“We have patrollers but it was difficult for them to catch the thugs because they used to sneak in and hide in the ceiling. The dogs run around the school premises and can smell them through their scent,” she said.
Parents said the decision to hire Basotho men to guard the school was a last resort. Parent Regina Kutumela said: “Our schools are vandalised and things are often stolen. We had to come up with a plan.”
The parents wouldn’t say how much they were paying the Basotho but said they did fundraising to cover the costs.
Captain Ramothakhi Maqabe of Etwatwa Police Station said cases of theft and burglary were opened and the thug will appear in court soon.
