A 21-year-old grade 12 pupil from Kamhlushwa in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, is being treated for massive injuries to her head and body at an undisclosed hospital.
This comes after her 22-year-old baby daddy attacked her with a panga in a jealous rage and almost took the young woman’s life.
Her aunt (46) told Daily Sun that her niece came to her a few weeks before the attack on 2 November and said her boyfriend was cheating on her and beating her up.
“I already knew something was wrong because she was losing weight. I told her to focus on her exams,” he said.
The aunt said the next day she saw the man walking around their place and thought he was looking for the house keys but while she was preparing to take a bath in the afternoon, she heard screams.
“I rushed to my niece’s place and found her lying in a pool of blood. She was bleeding profusely and unconscious. The boyfriend ran away, throwing the panga in the neighbour’s yard,” she said.
The aunt said her niece was taken to hospital where she is being treated. She said she had a surgery on Saturday, 20 November.
The suspect has been on the run since.
“My niece had already started writing her final exams. Now I’m worried she might be disabled because of the injuries,” she said.
“She wrote one subject but now she is in hospital.”
The aunt said she never thought the young man would do this.
“He was acting like an angel but he is a monster. We hope the police will find him soon,” she said.
“We fear for our lives, we don’t know if he will come back. He is out there and who knows what he is planning. If that panga was sharper, my niece could be dead.”
Tonga police spokesman Captain Magonseni Nkosi said police are still looking for the perpetrator.
He said a case of attempted murder has been registered and investigations are underway.
