SHE dreamt of owning a big restaurant, but that will never happen.

Hlengiwe Msimango was shot dead at her home in Birch Acres, Ekurhuleni, last Monday, allegedly by her fiance.

“She was lying next to the bed in her normal clothes, yet he claimed they were sleeping. She was shot in the chest,”

It’s believed the man told her family he mistook Hlengiwe for an intruder, but the family has accused him of lying.

Hlengiwe’s aunt Thandi Nkumane, who raised her, said she was unhappy in the relationship and was planning to leave with her two kids, aged three and eight months.

“I received a call from their neighbour at about 6am saying I should rush there because gunshots had been fired at Hlengiwe’s home,” she said.

Hlengiwe Msimango was killed.

“When I arrived police were there and the fiance was handcuffed in the back of their van.

“At that moment I knew my daughter had died.”

Thandi said police opened the van’s window and she asked the fiance what had happened.

“He said: ‘Ma, I’ve killed my wife’. He said he’d thought there were intruders in the house and went to check. When he returned to the bedroom, he saw a person’s shadow behind the bedroom curtain and started firing shots, only to find it was Hlengiwe.”

Thandi said cops allowed her inside the house to view the body and she felt something was fishy.

“She was lying next to the bed in her normal clothes, yet he claimed they were sleeping. She was shot in the chest,” she said.

Thandi said Hlengiwe’s friends later told her she was planning to leave.

“She was a secretive child but Hlengiwe told me he was having an affair,” she said.

Thandi said the man was also having financial problems.

“He always carried his gun and is a very stubborn person. My daughter wanted to run a fast food restaurant and had big dreams. She loved her family very much,” she said.

Gauteng police spokesman Captain Mavela Masondo said a 33-year-old suspect was charged with murder and would appear in court today for a bail application.
