WITH the lockdown in full swing and schools being closed for some time, has seen schools’ burglaries.
On Tuesday, two suspects were not so lucky to get away with the crime.
This was after they were arrested after being found with school items in Phiritona, Free State.
Resident Thabang Lokaneng (27) said they will never just sit back and allow the thugs to do as they pleased.
He said: "The schools are there to benefit our kids. We are the ones who should protect them to safeguard our children's future. I am happy to hear that the police have managed to remove two from our streets. I hear they were arrested during the time when everyone was supposed to be indoors due to lockdown. I hope the prosecutor adds the charges."
Police spokesman Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said the two men were arrested at about 3 am.
Makhele told Daily Sun: “On Tuesday, the Welkom POP Reaction Team was busy with crime prevention duties in Phiritona, Heilbron, and whilst on foot patrol at Sizabantu Informal settlement about 3 am, noticed two suspicious men carrying bags.”
“Members approached them and requested to search them. Housebreaking implements were found in the bags as well as drugs that were found in their person.
Circuit Breakers were also found which were later confirmed to have been stolen during housebreaking at two Primary schools in Phiritona.
The two aged 32 and 38 were arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property, possession of drugs, a charge of Contravention of DMA Reg 33 (1)(A) Failure to confine in a place of Residence from 9 pm and 4 am unless permitted to render essential service, reg48(2).
