WHENEVER they tried to apply for RDPs or jobs, they were told they were already earning good salaries.
But the group of former City of Tshwane workers lost their jobs in 2012.
When they tried to find out why they were still registered as municipal employees, they were sent from pillar to post.
The group of 856 former cleaners, electricians and plumbers were horrified in 2017 when they learnt they were ghost workers and someone was stealing money using their names.
They eventually took the matter to court and the municipality was instructed to re-employ them.
However, even after environmental management MMC Richard Moheta gave instructions for the them to be re-hired, the city’s human resources department continued dragging its feet.
A worker said MMC was often undermined by the human resources department.
“There is a clear push back by those who support corruption,” she said.
The worker said the problem started before the DA took over the city.
“I’m not blaming the previous political party, but there should be an investigation to find out who employed ghost workers,” she said.
Another victim said the issue had made his life very difficult.
“I tried to apply for an RDP, but I was told I didn’t qualify because I was employed. Some people couldn’t get other jobs because of this. This is corruption at the expense of poor people,” he said.
Moheta told the SunTeam the matter was being investigated and he’d comment when it was finalised.
