TWO maidens were buried this weekend after they died in a car crash last week.

Six girls died and seven were injured in an accident last Saturday while returning from a preparatory reed dance event in Msinga, KZN.

Only two bodies were identified, while the others were burnt beyond recognition.

The police were still waiting for DNA test results.

Sithabile Buthelezi from De Jagers Drift was buried on Saturday and Nonjabulo Dludla was laid to rest in Msinga yesterday. Arts and Culture MEC Hlengiwe Mavimbela attended both funerals.

Mavimbela told the SunTeam the pain felt by Sithabile’s family was shared by all Zulu people.

“She was going to grow up and be a responsible mother. These days, we need girls who respect our culture but her life was cut short by an irresponsible driver,” she said.

Sithabile’s friend, Sindiswa Mazibuko (18), described her as a fun and loving person.

“I was with her at the maidens’ event but I left in another car. This has really left me hurt,” she said.

Sithabele’s brother, Sabelo (27), said: “Cars and buses, as well as drivers who transport maidens should be checked properly.”
