REVEREND Zama Mfihlo told the SunTeam he will use the new level one regulations to fight gender-based violence.
Mfihlo, leader of the Apostolic Amen Church in Zion, said now that people were again gathering to watch soccer and to drink at taverns, he would visit these places to educate them about GBV.
“From tavern to tavern we will fight gender-based violence,” he said.
“It’s in these places that GBV takes place when people are drunk. The fight against the scourge can’t wait for 16 Days of Activism. It must start now.”
He said men come together in their numbers when Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are playing, but that is not the time to disturb them.
“Let them finish watching the match and then switch off the TV and ask for 15 minutes of their time. That way you will be able to address them,” he said.
Mfihlo, who is also the founder and president of Abathunywa Ministers Fraternity, an organisation of pastors fighting for social justice, said the recent killing of a Gugulethu woman allegedly by her boyfriend affected him.
Three weeks ago Jacqueline Mpontsana (40) was petrol bombed, allegedly by her boyfriend while she was at her home.
“The attack on women is happening 365 days of the year and in order to counter this, we have to fight GBV every day of our lives,” he said.
