THEY say it takes a mere village to raise a child.
Residents of Mathibestaad in North West donated a brand new wheelchair to Lehlogonolo Chauke (16).
Lehlogonolo was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child, which made it difficult for him to move around.
His family bought him a wheelchair, but it got old over time and caused Lehlogonolo pain.
Recently, residents decided to help the family after they saw how Lehlogonolo struggled.
One of the residents, Thokozile Moremi, said: “The wheelchair he needed was not like any other. He needed one that would be suitable for his condition.”
Thokozile works for Moretele Community Radio Station.
She said it was painful to see Lehlogonolo crawling on the floor each time he wanted to move around.
She said although they didn’t have much, residents managed to raise enough money within a week to buy the wheelchair.
She said it cost about R2 000.
“We all pitched in. The smile on his face gave our kasi hope,” she told the People’s Paper.
Thokozile said it was lovely to see the community come together for a good cause.
Lehlogonolo’s mum Bertha said she was grateful.
Bertha said it was painful to see her child struggling.
“I will now be able to sleep peacefully knowing that my child got what he’s always wanted,” Bertha told Daily Sun.
“You can even see from his smile that he’s very happy.”
