ASKING God to intervene, Jacob Zuma’s supporters gathered at the gates of Nkandla to pray for the former president’s health yesterday, 12 August.
His supporters, led by the ANC Women’s League in KZN, also prayed for him to be freed from Estcourt Prison where he was serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of the Constitutional Court.
Zuma was admitted to an unidentified military health centre late last week, days before he and his lawyers were due to argue charges against him at Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday.
The case was postponed to 9 September.
KZN ANC Women’s League PEC member Alice Mthembu told Daily Sun that when Zuma was arrested, they wondered what they would do if they were his wives.
She said they started by praying for Zuma’s first wife, MaKhumalo Zuma, in the house before they prayed outside.
“We are praying for Zuma’s life to be protected in any situation while we also pray for his wives to be stronger than ever.”
KZN ANC Women’s League secretary Nonhlanhla Gabela said they would always pray and love Zuma, even if others hated him.
“It hurts me to see so few supporters for Zuma during his difficult times,” she said.
Member of KZN legislature Bishop Vusi Dube said he never thought any ANC member would be happy to see Zuma arrested.
“Mzansi people forgave those who wronged them during apartheid. Why do they fail to forgive Zuma?

“As pastors, we started to pray for him in 2005 when he first appeared in the Durban High Court. The ANC can’t blame us for supporting him now,” he said.
Zuma’s son, Edward, said they were happy with the prayer, and hoped it would make a difference.
