PICTURES of inmates having a braai went viral – and people didn’t like it!

Prisoners are having a better time than people on the outside, seemed to be the general opinion.

Many said the inmates were using taxpayers’ money to enjoy themselves when they are supposed to be serving time.

Thabo Malefahla wrote on Facebook: “I heard these days they get more than one meal a day so they don’t mind committing crime.”

Neleshen Nairobi wrote: “Prison should be punishment for wrongdoing not for celebrating and feasting better than homeless people who have never committed a crime in their lives.”

But Pomelo Motaung had a different view: “We look at prison as some sort of punishment but authorities look at it as a rehabilitation centre. We have this thing that offenders must suffer but how will they be rehabilitated if they are suffering?”

Correctional Services did not name the facility where the braai took place but told Daily Sun it was nothing new.

Spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said there are various activities which take place in correctional centres where specific meals are prepared in line with what has been requested.

“When such meals are prepared, we utilise services of officials and inmates. In some instances, inmates will be involved in preparing a braai, should it be part of the requested meal,” he said.
