Schools have opened today and parents around kasi have accompanied their kids who are starting grade R to school.

There has been a mixed feeling as other kids are happy to be at school with others wanting to go back with their parents.

At Ntwasahlobo primary school in Khayelitsha principal Sam Sehloho said he was having difficulties with parents who are not bringing proper documentation for the kids.

“Most of the parents come to school with their children but it is difficult for us to process the learners into the system, a program developed by the department to register the learners. The system doesn’t accept the learners if the documents are not there.

“As educators we teach the kids, there are departments such as Social Development and Home Affairs where parents should go to get assistance, but parents come to us,” he said.

When the Sun Team entered into classrooms it was tears and joy as other kids where happy to be in grade R but others wanted to back home.

Teary little Luniko Magxwalisa (6) said he didn’t want to be at school: “I want to go home, I don’t want to be here, please let me go!”

At Abedare primary school teacher Zandiswa Mntuyedwa had a busy day dragging new grade R kids back into classrooms as some wanted to run away.

Lihle Khatshwa (6) didn’t want the new class as she wanted to go back to her old creche where she left many of her friends. “I don’t want to be here because my friends are not here, I want my mother to be here with me,” she said.
