MORE and more looting continued across Mzansi on Tuesday, 13 July.
- In Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, Chris Hani Mall was looted and some shops were set alight.
Other malls affected in Ekurhuleni included GoldSpot Centre, Naledi Mall, Letsoho Shopping Centre, Sam Ntuli Mall, Spruitview Complex and Busy Corner Mall.
The SunTeam found owners collecting what was left of their stock after looters left Busy Corner Mall.
- In Soweto, Jabulani Mall, Diepkloof Square and Protea Mall were among the shopping centres that were ransacked. Bambanani Mall in Diepsloot, north of Joburg, was also affected.
- In Mamelodi East, Tshwane, thugs looted and vandalised shops on the night of Monday 12 July.
Muhali Tshilidzi, the manager of HiFi Corporation in Mams Mall, said everything in the shop that employed 12 people was taken. He said property worth R4,5 million was stolen.
“All the TVs and fridges were stolen and nothing was left.”
OBC Chicken and Meat Butchery’s Ndumiso Mnguni said looting started at about 7pm on Monday night. “Everything in the shop is gone. They vandalised everything and even took money from ATMs.”
He said the damage amounted to almost R10 million. He said 60 people worked at the shop.
Danlyn Mall’s head of security, who didn’t want to give his name, said: “A lot of community members from the hostels came to loot. This thing was planned as they came with cars. They were armed and fired shots at the police. They did loot, but we managed to contain the situation.”
Resident Samuel Ngobeni (58) said: “This must be condemned because this is thuggery and people are stealing their own property. Tomorrow, they will be on the streets complaining that there are no jobs.”
Mapule Phiri (23) said the police must arrest everyone involved.
- Meanwhile in KZN, Premier Sihle Zikalala said the damage would amount to at least R1 billion and that 26 people had died. He said a total of 304 people had already been arrested in the province.
Democratised Transport Logistics and Allied Workers Union general secretary, Vusi Ntshangase called on road freight employers not to send trucks to hot spots for the safety of their workers.
- In Matsulu, Mpumalanga, more than 15 shops were looted of stock valued at more than R5 million. Two people were also arrested for breaking into a liquor outlet in Mbombela.
