INSTEAD of just complaining, these men decided to do something to keep their community safe.
The group of men from Langa, Cape Town, started a safety patrol last March to keep thugs on their toes.
Member Bandile Gcuwa (30) told Daily Sun: “There was a community meeting about the high crime rate in our area.
“Everyone was there including women. After the meeting we asked the men to remain behind so we could talk about patrolling the area.”
Bandile said they started with 150 members but many had since left.
“This never bothered us because we continue cleaning our streets,” he said.
Sindile Moya (60) said they knew all the hotspots.
“You can walk any time here and no one will touch you. We have ways of dealing with people terrorising residents,” he said.
“We still have people breaking into houses, but the number has dropped because we’re working closely with the community.”
Members said although they were proud of their work, they knew they were not safe.
“Doing this without getting paid shows we’re concerned about residents.
“We’ll continue protecting them while they’re asleep,” said a member.
They said their wish was to get equipment so they could do their work properly. They said they’d appreciate any donations.
Resident Nwabisa Msindwana (40) said they felt much safer since the patrols started.
“They’re doing a good job because ever since they started, the number of robberies and break-ins has dropped. We’re grateful to these men.”
