PATIENTS and people who visited the surgery of Dr Sizwe Mxenge (47) must come forward for testing!

This is the call from the Eastern Cape Department of Health after the well-known King William’s Town doctor tested positive for Covid-19 two weeks ago. Mxenge has been admitted to ICU in a private hospital in East London.

Luvuyo Bayeni, technical advisor to Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba, said: “We appeal to patients who visited Dr Mxenge’s surgery between 27 March and 9 April to come forward for screening and testing.”

He said through the register they found 140 patients visited the surgery, 81 of whom were from Buffalo City Municipality areas such as Mdantsane, King William’s Town and Bhisho.

Some came from Amathole District Municipality areas such as Alice and Fort Beaufort, and a few from Mthatha. Of the 66 on the list for Bhisho and King William’s Town, 31 had been tested and were awaiting results.

Bayeni said: “We sent our tracing teams to the addresses of the patients. Tracers have managed to trace about 40 of the patients in Buffalo City Municipality.”

The department called on patients who saw Mxenge to be available for the tracer teams when contacted and visit hospitals and clinics for screening and testing.
