BISHOP Samuel Mthethwa (83) and his wife Ester (63) have conquered the odds through love.
Even though the bishop was born with a disability, all Ester saw was eternal love.
The couple from Mandela Village, near KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, have been married for 38 years and have been blessed with three children.
“When I first saw my wife, I knew she was the love of my life.
“She’s respectful and I saw the way she conducted herself.
“I then proposed and she agreed to be my wife, but after a long time.”
Ester said the bishop’s proposal came as a surprise.
“I looked at his condition and knew he couldn’t do anything for himself. People talked. I didn’t care. I wanted eternal love. I’m still enjoying it to this day.”
Bob Mathebula had to wait for his wife to mourn her first husband’s death before they could be together.
Bob and Norma Mashaba, both aged 64, are from Msholozi in Mpumalanga and worked on the same farm when they first met.
He fell head over hills in love with her and knew they were a match made in heaven.
“I had to wait for her to go through the mourning process. Today we’re celebrating our 17th Valentine’s Day together,” said Bob.
He said the secret to their successful relationship was respect and communication.
Norma said they’d spend Valentine’s Day having fun if their finances were in order.
“Since we don’t have a budget for all the things we planned to do, we’ll bake, cook and spend the day together,” she said.
