The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has unveiled specialised vehicles to help combat crime in the city.
On Monday morning, JMPD Special Patrol Unit was boosted with 40 brand new Golf 7 GTI’s special patrol vehicles at the Public Safety Department Headquarters in Martindale.
MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun said the acquisition of these vehicles forms part of the JMPD fleet renewal programme.
“We won't be outrun by criminals in the city simply because they drive the most powerful cars and that comes to an end as we unveil these brand new vehicles,” he said.
Sun said the new vehicles will be utilized by the JMPD SPU in its daily tasks ranging from attending to accident scenes, land invasions, dealing with road traffic offences at identified hotspots, visible policing, patrols and events management, amongst others.
“The added fleet will go a long way in ensuring that those who are forever in the wrong side of the law are dealt with,” he added.
Chief of the JMPD David Tembe said their department was happy to receive new vehicles that would help them tighten public safety.
“We now have a team of high-speed cars and they will come in handy when responding to emergency calls,” he said.
