THE family of the late former Kaizer Chiefs player, Lucky Maselesele, have refuted claims he was killed for allegedly stealing cables.
“There are allegations of him cutting wires and we deny that because even the police didn’t find a step ladder or tools to cut wires. That’s why we’re asking the police to investigate,” said Lucky’s cousin and family spokesman Ike Phaswana.
This after it was widely reported that Lucky was caught stealing cables to feed his alleged drug addiction.
He was attacked by a group who beat him, stoned him to death and also set vicious pitbulls on him on Wednesday evening.
“All we can say is that let’s give the police the space to investigate and let’s stop saying he was cutting cables. We deny that and we also reserve the right to take action to correct the version,” said Ike.
“There is nothing that shows that the cables were cut. That was the version given by someone who wanted to tarnish Lucky’s name.”
On the allegations of drug use, Ike said: “I’ve never seen Lucky take drugs, so I can’t comment on that.”
He described Lucky as a very lovable person who loved football.
He said he was working to start a foundation.
“Unfortunately, he couldn’t. He wanted to give back to the community.”
He said the family would decide after the funeral what would happen with the foundation.
Lucky leaves behind two kids aged nine and five.
Two people have been arrested in connection with his murder and are due to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Monday, 18 October.
