Migrants and asylum seekers will have access to Gauteng’s hospitals when the National Health Insurance is implemented.

Gauteng Health MEC Dr Bandile Masuku said: “Migrant access to healthcare will not be affected in any way – the Constitution guarantees anyone access to healthcare.

“The NHI fund guarantees that registered migrants and asylum seekers, will still have access.”

The Gauteng Department of Health was expected to recoup the money from migrants’ countries of origin for healthcare afforded to them in the province, Masuku said.

“Currently, we do not have a system in place in the department to get back the money used to provide healthcare to migrants and their children.

“We had tried to get back the money. We will still attempt to do this, and we had received payments from Lesotho and Botswana.

“However, Nigeria refused but with the National Health Insurance we would be able to bill you and the fund.” – NEWS24
