Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has announced that grades 12 will rewrite the two leaked exam question papers maths paper 2 and physical science paper 2.
Motshekga said an investigations task team was assigned to establish the extent of the leak, so to determine if a rewrite was necessary.
She said the Council of Education Ministers also expected the task team to make recommendations on restoring the credibility of the 2020 examination in the country as a whole and most of all establish the source of the leak.
The minister said having considered all of these factors, the council decided that a national rewrite of both papers was necessary.
“Maths paper 2 will be written on Tuesday 15 December at 2pm and physical sciences paper 2 will be written on Thursday 17 December at 9am,” she said.
Motshekga said it was not an easy decision to make but one which was necessary under the circumstances.
She said they needed to work hard to deal with the human factor in the examination system.
“It is clear that the people responsible for leaking the question papers are adults. The council appreciates the work being done by the Hawks,” she said.
Motshekga said there were also rumours of business studies question paper being leaked but they moved swiftly to replace it.
She also welcomed the arrest that has been made and said she hoped more arrests would follow.
“We really need to send a strong message that tampering with national examination is a serious offence,” she said.
