The junkie and the friend, aged 27 and 29, died on the scene in Phutanang kasi in Kimberley, Northern Cape, on Sunday.

According to witnesses, the suspect first stabbed a friend in the chest over a woman while a crowd watched.

The witness told Daily Sun: “I was on my way to the shops when I overheard two men arguing. The suspect was accusing his friend of poking his lover.

“I intervened but the suspect drew a knife.

“He chased his friend until he fell over. He stabbed him while screaming, ‘You poked my girlfriend’ before fleeing.

“The street is usually patrolled by cops, but during the stabbing there were none. Most residents went outside to watch the fight.”

Kamogelo Motlae was sitting outside his house when he saw the suspect going into a nearby house.

“I could hear him demanding drugs from a man standing outside. He suddenly stabbed him twice and fled. I later learnt the same suspect had stabbed someone else earlier,” he said.

Northern Cape police spokesman Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba said a 27-year-old man was arrested for double murder.

“Both murders are being investigated,” he said.

“The suspect will appear in the Galeshewe Magistrates Court soon.”
