A car was found underwater in the Hartbeespoort Dam between the Snake Park and Hartbeespoort Dam bridge.

The National Sea Rescue Institute’s Strategic Response and Rescue Unit was initiated following an eye-witness report of a car in the dam.

In a statement, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) station commander Arthur Crewe, said they responded.

On arrival on the scene, the car was found submerged in the water.

“NSRI and SRU rescue swimmers free dived on the car and a safety line was attached to the submerged car from a towing services vehicle,” said Crewe.

The rescue team, while free diving on the vehicle, was able to break into the vehicle and the body of a man was recovered from the car and taken onboard the SRU rescue craft.

Crewe said the body of the man was brought to the NSRI rescue station where HEMS paramedics declared the man deceased.

The body of the unidentified man was then taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services and cops have opened an inquest docket.
