MAI MAI SOCIAL SHAME!

accreditation

IT WAS nothing but good vibes at Kwa Mai Mai over the weekend.

People weren’t there just to chow. They chilled with cooler boxes filled with booze while dancing to music from their cars.

AND THERE WERE NO MASKS AND NO SOCIAL DISTANCING!

“People don’t want to listen. I’m still puzzled about what I saw and have been asking myself why grown-ups are behaving in this manner when we’re fighting to flatten the curve of the virus.”

Photos and videos of the social gathering in the Joburg CBD trended on social media, with many people describing the behaviour as irresponsible.

However, residents who spoke to Daily Sun on condition of anonymity said the gathering was more about getting revenge on government. They said government was led by hypocrites.

Said one resident: “They tell us to observe Covid-19 regulations and ban tobacco and alcohol sales, yet they smoke, drink and gather at funerals with more than 50 people. If they lift the ban on the sale of alcohol, people will buy from their nearest bottle stores and stay home.

“There won’t be a reason for anyone to drive all the way to Kwa Mai Mai.”

Residents said they were upset about the images of more than 50 people gathered recently outside anti-apartheid stalwart Andrew Mlangeni’s home in Soweto.

As if that wasn’t enough, a few days later there were screenshots of defence force members smoking cigarettes just before Mlangeni’s funeral service.

Another resident said: “A number of places here in Kwa Mai Mai never stopped selling alcohol.

“Instead, they’ve pushed up the prices of alcohol and cigarettes because people want to continue drinking and smoking.

“On Sunday, people came to buy meat and braai – and when they learnt there were places selling alcohol many called their friends to come over.”

He said people didn’t care about rules imposed by government because officials didn’t follow the same rules.

He said this was the second weekend the place was overcrowded. One of the women selling skop said: “We can’t chase away customers when we don’t get any financial support from government. The more people sit and drink, the more they buy my skop, and I’m able to put food on the table for my kids.”

However, Kwa Mai Mai’s induna, Nkaberong Ndwandwe, condemned the incident.

He said: “People don’t want to listen. I’m still puzzled about what I saw and have been asking myself why grown-ups are behaving in this manner when we’re fighting to flatten the curve of the virus.”

Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said Gauteng police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, ordered an urgent investigation into allegations of serious contravention of lockdown regulations at Kwa Mai Mai.

Said Peters: “The district commissioner of Joburg will with immediate effect heighten visibility and closely monitor the area and its surroundings as police, the army, provincial traffic and Metro police continue to collaborate in ensuring adherence to lockdown regulations.”

The Gauteng department of Health spokeswoman, Kwara Kekana said: “Members of the community are urged to adhere to the lockdown regulations.

“We plead with the public to note that the fight against the spread of the pandemic requires a collective effort.”
