FORMER Nelson Mandela Bay councillor Andile Lungisa was arrested for violating Disaster Management Act and set free on warning.

Lungisa made a brief appearance at Motherwell Magistrates Court in Nelson Mandela Bay on Friday after he was summoned to appear in court for contravening Alert Level 4 of the Disaster Management Act.

It is the state case that on 2 July 2021 at corner of Addo road and Malinge street in Wells Estate, Lungisa allegedly convened an illegal gathering of about 30 people.

It is alleged on the day in question the former councillor and convict organised a group of former president Jacob Zuma supporters to demonstrate against his imprisonment.

The group delivered their petition to the Motherwell Magistrates Court to oppose the incarceration of Zuma.

NPA spokeswoman Anelisa Ngcakani said: "Lungisa was released on warning and his case was postponed to 29 July for copies of the docket and for him to consult with his lawyer."

"Magistrate ordered him not to interfere with the investigation of the case nor communicate with witnesses," she said.
