OPPOSITION parties have welcomed the removal of eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and Msunduzi mayor Themba Njilo.
DA caucus leader in eThekwini Nicole Graham said good riddance to Gumede.
“She should have been removed long ago,” she said.
Graham called on the ANC to fire councillors who supported Gumede while she was “destroying the city”.
“We welcome her dismissal, and it’s been long overdue,” she said.
“We want more heads to roll as she wasn’t alone in looting taxpayers’ money.”
Provincial ANC secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli said Gumede and her mayoral committee were removed after failing to resolve refuse collection issues in Umlazi and for incorrect billing system problems.
He said the ANC was not buying officials’ claims that they didn’t know what was going on. He said the party wanted its officials to account and, if the mayor failed, it was also their problem.
DA legislature member Megan Chetty said the damage Njilo caused would take a long timeto fix.
Njilo was shown the door, along with deputy mayor Thobani Zuma and speaker Jabu Ngubo.
IFP leader in the legislature Velenkosini Hlabisa hoped the ANC would replace the two with competent people.
Ntuli said positions made vacant would be filled within seven days.
