JUSTICE Minister Ronald Lamola has called on the Special Investigating Unit to produce results in the fight against corruption.
He said the unit’s work was important as corruption was everywhere.
“It is within this context that we welcome the operationalisation of the Special Tribunal. It’s also encouraging that its first case deals with the Office of the State Attorney.
“It also shows the unit is not afraid to start within the justice family.”
Lamola said the unit needed to guard its integrity, as those who had benefited from corruption wouldn’t go down without a fight.
“We now have a Special Tribunal in place and there is no doubt you will be judged not only by the number of cases you refer to the tribunal but also by the number of referrals which actually result in wins for the state,” he said.
Lamola said it was vital for the institution to be efficient in the way in which it allocated resources, as Mzansi’s economy was struggling.
He said the damning information which came out about the Department of Correctional Services at the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture would be probed. – NEWS24
