POLICE are investigating a murder and attempted murder case after two men were shot in Marikana squatter camp while delivering bread to a supermarket.
The incident happened on Sheffield Road in Philippi East on Tuesday, 25 January, at about 11.50am.
A resident from the squatter camp told Daily Sun that the victims made the mistake of visiting the area without police escort.
“Everyone knows how dangerous our area is.
“I don’t know why the victims took a risk of coming here without being escorted, I feel sorry for them,” said the resident.
Another resident, Masixole Sawutana (40), said people visiting the area needed to start at the police station.
“Philippi East is dangerous. Thugs often rob taxi drivers passengers and their passengers in this area.”
Captain FC van Wyk said cops received a complaint of the shooting on Sheffield Road in Philippi East.
“When they arrived at the scene, they found the body of a 31-year-old foreigner on the pavement with multiple gunshots wounds to his back and head.
“It was also established that another person was shot in the back and taken to a nearby hospital.
“The victims were delivering bread to a supermarket when they were attacked by unknown men,” Van Wyk told the People’s Paper.
