RESIDENTS of Bhambayi squatter camp in Inanda, KZN, are up in arms.

This comes after they were allegedly kicked out of their RDPs by municipal officials on Friday.

Jean Bishop (45) told Daily Sun she was at work when the evictions took place.

“I used to live in a shack, which collapsed,” said Jean.

“I was then put in the disaster management programme and allocated an RDP in 2019.

“But on Friday, eThekwini municipal officials kicked me out of the RDP.

“They took the house keys and threw out my belongings.”

According to Jean, the municipal officials brought a new owner from another area to the house.

Another evicted resident, gogo Niniza Mtolo (50), said she had nowhere to go.

“They came twice demanding I move out,” said

“On the first occasion they took the house keys and left with them.

“On Friday they told me to move out because they were bringing someone from another ward.”

As a result of the evictions, Bhambhayi residents took to the streets on Saturday, demanding the evicted residents be returned to their homes.

Community leader, Blessing Nyuswa, told the People’s Paper: “Residents are angry because people who have the right to occupy the RDPs were kicked out, and people who don’t live in this area were brought in to occupy their houses.”

Councillor Sthembiso Zulu confirmed the RDPs belong to Bhambayi residents.

“They have been living in these houses since 2019. But on Friday people who don’t belong in my ward were brought in to occupy them.

“Nothing was communicated to me and I hope to get answers from the responsible officials,” he told the People’s Paper.

The eThekwini Municipality failed to respond to a request for comment which Daily Sun sent.

It promised to respond but had not done so at the time of going to print.
